OUR STORY

Why would an asthma sufferer work with damp and mould?

Well, that's what my doctor asked me with a genuinely baffled look on her face! And it is a good question, why would I work with damp and mould when I suffer with asthma? The honest answer is that I love buildings and I want every body in the UK to live in a warm, dry and healthy home. It shouldn't be a lofty goal and yet somehow it is. After a decade on and off the tools in construction I realised that so many of the problems I see in homes are down to a lack of understanding around how moisture moves in a building. This is the knowledge which could immediately improve the lives of so many people and it is this which gets me up in the morning. Yes, I am a damp nerd and proud of it.

Damp and mould are not simply maintenance or decorative  issues, they have real world legal, health and reputational consequences. That's why Ministry of Mould only use property surveyors with years of experience looking at building defects and dealing with disrepair for private and social landlords....30+ years of experience in one case (Sorry, Peter 😊).

Ministry of Mould aims to uncover the real causes of damp and mould, offer clear, practical solutions and explain clearly why the damp or mould is happening.

We can help you with:

  • Assessing and diagnosing the causes of damp and mould
  • Mould testing commercial and residential property
  • DIY mould testing kits and self paced courses
  • Landlord compliance with new legislation

 How are you impartial?

Ministry of Mould do not carry out any damp works such as hacking off plaster, injecting damp proof courses, installing membranes etc. We provide detailed damp surveys and testing to give you an honest opinion on the causes of damp or mould. There are many damp contractors out there who are keen to sell you a 'system' or a 'treatment' to stop the damp, these can often damage the building even more and trap moisture in the walls. We aim to find the cause of the damp, not just treat the symptom.

 Does rising damp exist?

This is always a hot topic for debate! After years in the damp industry I have come to the conclusion that rising damp exists to a degree and bricks will certainly wet up to 1 or 2 courses above the ground. However, rising damp is very commonly misdiagnosed leading to expensive treatments that don't solve the problem, and can even put a house at greater risk of damp and decay. The far greater threat to homes comes from condensation and uncontrolled humidity. I do hold the PCA qualification of CSRT but you will notice that this company is not registered with them, perhaps because our opinion on how to tackle damp is incompatible.

 What areas do you cover?

We cover a rough area of South West England including Bristol, Cardiff Area, Central London (Zones 1-3), Surrey and some of the South East. If you are struggling to find someone reliable in your area then please feel free to get in touch, if we can't help then we may know someone who can.

 Will my house fall down?

This is the number one question we get asked when carrying out surveys. The answer is not yet 😊

What is the most common cause of damp in a house?

Not opening windows. There I said it. This is so simple and so essential that I simply cannot say it enough times...open your windows and let the wet air you have created out!
